Early Daguerreotypist and photographer. Hughes was an assistant to John Jabez Edwin Mayall in London; moved to Glasgow and opened a studio around 1849; became active in the Glasgow Photographic Society in the early 1850s; returned to London and bought Mayall's studio in 1855; later built the Regina House Studio in Ryde on the Isle of Wight and became photographer to Queen Victoria.
