First incroporated by an act on 19th may 1836 with help from Harry Verney for a single line branch to Cheddington. Due to a local rivalry the work was delayed until May 1838 under Robert Stephenson. It opened on 10th June 1839. It was worked by London and Brighton Railway and was taken over by them when the London and North Western railway was formed on 16th July 1846
