1831 - entered the Royal Academy Schools. 1832 - won a silver medal for a drawing from the antique. 1845 - worked as a headmaster of the school of design at Somerset House. 1861 - bought Willesley, a house in Cranbrook, Kent which became recognized as an artists' colony. 1855 - was elected an associate of the Royal Academy. 1864 - elected a Royal Academician. 1882 - served as treasurer at the Royal Academy.
