born Galston, Scotland and worked as an apprentice for Glasgow and South Western Railway (GSWR). After finishing his apprenticeship he became a fitter for a year at Sharp Stewart in Manchester before returning to GSWR. In 1866 he moved to Great Northern Railway, for which he worked for 12 years after which he joined South Eastern Railway. He retired in 1898 and died in Ashford in 1917.
