Topham worked as a policeman in the East End of London until he sold a picture to the Daily Mirror and decided to become a professional. He photographed daily life in south-east England. His most famous picture is of hop-pickers’ children sheltering in a trench in 1940 during the Battle of Britain. Active c 1927-1973.
