1682 - entered service as a dockyard surveyor. 1685–1687 - served in the Hope (70 guns). 1698 - became master mastmaker. 1705 - became master shipwright at Harwich. 1714 - became master shipwright at Woolwich. 1715 - became Surveyor of the Navy.
