1734 - founded on the insistence of George II of Great Britain and Hanover. 1751 - Göttingen Academy of Sciences founded. 1766 - Benjamin Franklin visited the academy. 1782 - parts of the ethnographic collection gathered by James Cook on his journeys to the South were brought to Göttingen by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach. 1833 - Carl Friedrich Gauß and Wilhelm Weber installed the first functioning electromagnetic telegraph between the Paulinerkirche and the university observatory. 1945 - was the first German university to resume teaching after World War II.
