1792 - joined the army and served on the Rhine. 1794 - having lost an eye he was repatriated and invalided out of the army. 1800 - joined Nicolas Thomas Baudin's expedition to complete the French cartographic survey of the coast of Australia. 1804 - after his return to France he was commissioned to write the official history of Baudin's expedition.
