1815 - started shipping brokerage company in London, employing Arthur Anderson as a clerk. 1835 - along with Anderson and Dublin ship owner, Captain Richard Bourne, issued the first prospectus of the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company. 1847 - became Liberal Member of Parliament for Southampton: remained an MP for the rest of his life. 1858 - chairman of P&O until his death.
