1913 - construction for the Hite Star Line, began at Harland and Wolff, Belfast, following sister ships Titanic and Olympic. Originally to be named Gigantic but after the sinking of the Titanic, the name was changed. 1914 - launched and towed to the Abercon Basin for fitting. 1915 - following compleition, she was requisitioned by the government for use as a hospital ship in the First World War. 1916 - suffered an unexplained explosion and sank off the Greek island of Makronisos.
