SS Harbinger (1851)

1846 - built by Ditchburn & Mare as the Royal Navy iron brig, P.S. Recruit. 1849 - sold back to CJ Mare and converted to the S.S. Harbinger. 1851 - launched with lengthened hull and screw engines. Sold to the General Screw Steam Shipping Company. 1852 - ran aground on the Thames, following a collision with the brig Resolution. 1854 - damaged in a storm in Balaclava Harbour while serving as a government transport ship. 1856 - sold to the Russian Government. 1860 - condemned and sold as unseaworthy.
