1827-1837 - served as an officer in the Grenadier Guards. 1831 - was MP for the rotten borough of Beeralston, Devon. 1847 - elected MP for the North Northumberland county seat. 1858 - appointed Lord of Admiralty. 1859 - appointed vice-president of the Board of Trade. 1866-1899 - served as president of the Royal Lifeboat Institution. 1867 - following the death of his father, became the 6th Duke of Northumberland. 1873-1899 - served as president of the Royal Institution. 1877 - became Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland.
