Formed in 1871, and claimed to represent all railway workers though it would not represent general labourers or those working as craftsmen in the engineering shop. Was instrumental in the founding of the labour party and its activities until it became illegal to use union funds for political purposes. In 1913 it merged with the General Railway Workers Union and the United Pointsmen and Signalmen's Society to form the National Union of Railwaymen
