Founded in 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney, who in 1971 had produced their first arcade game for their engineering firm Syzygy Engineering in 1971; pioneer in arcade games, home video game consoles, and home computers; produced Pong in 1975; introduced Atari 2600 (sometimes called VCS for Video Computer System) games console in 1977; Atari was sold to Warner Communications in 1976 to capitalise the project; expanded into home computer market with Atari 400 and 800; introduced Atari 5200 games console in 1982 but due to increasing competition Warners sold Atari's home computing and gaming divisions to Tramel Technology in 1984 to form Atari Corporation, retaining the Arcade game division as Atari Games (eventally sold to Namco in 1985).
