Formed by the amalgamation of Swindon, Marlborough & Andover and the Swindon & Cheltenham Extension Railways; running powers into Southampton had been authorised but not used until 1893 for goods and 1894 for passenger trains; saved from bankruptcy by Sam Fay; the company was taken over by the Great Western Railway in 1923.
