1794 - left Geneva with his family to settle in England. 1797 - became a student at the Royal Academy Schools. 1808 - with his brother, John and six other practising artists, founded the Society for the Study of Epic and Pastoral Design, later known as the Bread and Cheese Society. 1810 - first exhibited a picture at the Royal Academy. 1816 - elected a Royal Academician.
