Multinational US corporation which produces imaging and photographic materials and equipment, Kodak trademark registered in 1888 by George Eastman (1954-1932), inventor of roll film; Eastman Kodak founded 1892; grew out of Eastman Dry Plate Company of Rochester, New York; known as Eastman Kodak of New York from 1892 until 1901, when the Eastman Kodak Company of New Jersey was formed; acquired the General Aristo Company of Jamestown, New York, 1901; produced first popular cameras for non-expert use; early twenty-first century has seen Kodak move towards digital imaging, announcing in 2004 that it would stop marketing traditional cameras and announcing in 2009 that it would cease production of Kodachrome film (first developed in 1935); filled for Chapter 11 bankrupcy January 2012, ceasing production of digital cameras, videos and photo frames.
