His family dissapproved of art as an occupation so joined Scotland Yard in 1902. He was appointed Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in 1932 and held the position until 1947. He was knighted in 1945. Still remained interested in art throughout his life and twenty of his pieces were made into posters. He also wrote four books on the subject
