1918 - became a member of the Official Painters of the Navy, giving him an officer's rank and giving him access to ships and naval facilities in both peace and wartime.

During his working life, he illustrated numerous books and was well-known for the accuracy and precision of his paintings of ships of all types and in all sorts of weather.
