Dodgson was nominated in 1852 for a studentship of Christ Church. Three years later he became a lecturer of mathematics there. He was ordained deacon in 1861 but didn't take priest's orders. He wrote a number of publications, both mathematical and literary; his first book being published in 1860. In 1856 he took up photography as a hobby and began photographing the daughters of Henry George Liddell. Dodgson wrote and illustrated 'Alice's Adventures' in 1864, for which he was to write two sequels. He also wrote poetry including ' The Hunting of the Snark'. In addition, Dodgson devoted time to inventing puzzles and games, and writing numerous pamphlets about the need for parliamentary reform. He was also a member of the Society of Psychical Research.
