Liver surgeon and inventor of a liver clamp which bears his name. The Balasegaram liver retractor was among the first to make liver surgery possible, and is still used to this day (2008). The first Asian to win the Jacksonian Prize of The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS). Set up the country's first Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Seremban Hospital (Malasyia) where he was the consultant surgeon.
