The North British Locomotive Company was founded in Glasgow, in 1903, through the merger of three Glaswegian companies: Sharp Stewart, Neilson and Company and Dübs and Company. They had works at Atlas and Hyde Park Works in Springburn, Glasgow.

Although at the time of formation they were one of the largest locomotive producers in Europe they failed to adapt to the development of diesel and electric engines and eventually declared themselves bankrupt in 1962. Their Queen's Park, Atlas and Hyde Park works closed the following year after completing outstanding orders.
