Formed on 22 May 1834 by the amalgamation of the Preston and Wigan and the Wigan Branch Railways. Totaled 15.5 miles. Opened to Preston on 31 October 1838. In 1844 it brought the Bolton and Preston Railway. It was jointly absorbed by the LNWR and LYR in act of 26 July 1889.
