university clinical lecturer on diseases of children; Physician to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children;active as a General Practitioner in Edinburgh; 1872 - graduated MB at Edinburgh; licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh; studied in Paris and Vienna; began practice at 25, Rutland Street, Edinburgh; assistant to Dr. Angus Macdonald, general and obstetric practitioner; acted as medical officer to the New Town Dispensary, Edinburgh; interested in disorders of children and was appointed assistant physician, and later physician, to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, to which he finally became consulting physician.

1876 - Dr. Playfair joined the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh as a Fellow, FRCPEd; and was elected president from 1904 to 1906. 1892 - graduated MDEd; sometime vice-president of the Obstetrical Society of Edinburgh; 1890 - published in Edinburgh
