Incorporated on 7 July 1862. The plan was to link Witney and Cheltenham, but the GWR withdrew its initial backing and only 14 miles, from Witney to Fairford ever opened, on 15 January 1873. The company was transferred to the GWR with effect from 1 September 1890.
