Incorporated on 10 July 1854 to build a 5.25-mile line between two towns, it opened on 15 September 1856 (goods) and 13 October (passengers). It was worked by the G&SWR, which received further running powers and authority to work and maintain the line with effect from 1 August 1863 (Act of 13 July). It absorbed the company with effect from 1 February 1871 (Act of 29 June).
