Third son of Jahangir, he secured his succession by killing most of his male relatives. His campaigns expanded the Mogul dominions. Although relatively tolerant of Hinduism, he made Islam the state religion. Shah Jahan was responsible for building the Taj Mahal and the vast chambers of the Red Fort at Delhi, which became his capital.
