1856 - aged only 11, accompanied his mother's cousin to the Crimean War where he earned the Crimean medal and Sevastopol clasp. 1858–60 - attended Harrow. 1864-1868 - served in India as an ensign in the rifle brigade. 1875 - retired from the army and bought a partnership in a Chelmsford engineering firm. 1886 - formed the Kensington Court Company for electricity supply to neighbouring premises. 1896 - founder member of the Royal Automobile Club. 1903 - was one of the judges at the first motor show. 1926 - awarded the Faraday medal. 1933 - elected FRS.
