He writes " this is transmitted commercially through ether from Alum Bay [Isle of Wight] to Bournemouth and by postal telegraph thence to Glasgow".
This was the first such commercial telegraph.
Maclean was assistant in the Physical Laboratory, and later professor at Glasgow Technical College.
