Painting, [A Manufacturing Town] by L. S. Lowry, 1922. Oil on panel; 43.2x53.3cm in wood and gilt frame, 64x74.5x7.5cm. Signed and dated, bottom left. Industrial cityscape, of no place in particular but in the spirit of a northern town such as the artist's native Salford: an early work with a dark background, painted before Lowry was encouraged to lighten the sky. The artist combines elements of factory buildings, mine heads, smoking chimneys, busy street life and civic pride.
