This print was created for the International Inventions’ Exhibition held at South Kensington in 1885, which celebrated inventions in the following categories: gas engines, electrical engineering, machinery, horology, electrical light and steam engines. The print illustrates the development of locomotion technology and includes information and headshots of the judging panel.

According to the ‘International Inventions Exhibition: official guide’ by the Royal College of Surgeons, the intention to hold an International Invention Exhibition was expressed by the Prince of Wales, in reference to the passing of the New Patent Act. This Act was designed to be useful to the ‘poorer classes of inventors’, as well as highlighting the progress of invention since the Great International Exhibition (1862).
