The popular comics Elsie (1895-1990) and Doris Walters (1904-1978) are seated amongst an excited crowd of children. Each woman holds both a child and a lion cub on her lap - under the watchful eye of a zoo keeper. Meanwhile, in the background on the left, a small boy pulls a face for the camera. London Zoo was founded for the scientific study of animals in 1829, opening to the public in 1847.
