Meerschaum pipe, bowl carved with figures of Frederick (Emperor of Germany 1888) and his Consort, 1880-1890, Austria or England.

Carved from meerschaum, a versatile clay-like material, this extravagent tobacco pipe shows the figures of Frederick III (1831-1888) and his consort Victoria (1840-1901). The pipe may have been made to celebrate his coronation in 1888. Unfortunately, Frederick died having ruled for only ninety days.

The coat of arms is the Order of the Garter in England, an honour Frederick at the time of his marriage. His wife was the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria.
