Manchester Aeronautical Society

The Manchester Aeronautical Society was a club for aviation and gliding enthusiasts. It is known to have been in existence from at least 1931 up until 1953, and potentially beyond. The Society owned its own gliders, including a Slingsby T.4 Falcon III in 1937. The gliding section merged with the Matlock Gliding Club and Derby Gliding Club in 1935 to form the Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club. The Club leased a farm at Camphill as its base. During the Second World War, Camphill began to be used by the Air Training Corps (Air Cadets) for glider training. By 1945 Roy Chadwick of A.V. Roe & Co Ltd was President of the amalgamated Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club.
