In the early part of the 20th Century Charles Richard Lindsey, after completing his studies at Owens College, was set up in business, as a manufacturing chemist, by his father. It is not clear if there was a partner involved during the early days of the business, as a notebook contains the name Lindsey & Fasnacht, Clayton, Manchester 1906.

The factory, also known as the Lindsey Chemical Works situated on Chatham Street, Clayton later became The Rubber Heel Manufacturing Company was next door to the Clayton Aniline Co Ltd.
