Daphne Oram was the first woman to: 1958 - Direct an electronic music studio - BBC Radiophonic Workshop; 1959 - Set up a personal studio; 1962 - Design an electronic music instrument. She was also the inventer of 'Oramics' sound synthesis. As such, she is seen as the pioneer of electronic music.
