1843 - enrolled at the Sheffield School of Design. 1854 - commissioned to design a 60 foot long frieze for the Sheffield Mechanics Institute. 1859 - left for London to work on the Horticultural Society's new buildings and the South Kensington Museum (V&A). 1860 - was asked by Thackeray to design the cover of the Cornhill Magazine.
